Description

He knew life would contain lessons. But profound wisdom would come from his unexpected career as a global humanitarian volunteer.

Service is a calling. When one man answered, he would change lives beginning with his own.

As he traveled through and lived in Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru, the re-named “Doctor” Alonzo found himself surrounded by indigenous peasant leaders and communities in raucous tribal celebrations, social movements for change, wonders of nature and marvels of human kindness and romance while hitchhiking to the very tip of South America and its glaciers and penguins.

But also sometimes unexpected dangers – near-death illness in the jungle, getting shot at in a police-military crossfire, an arrest and detention behind bars by an anti-American colonel looking to jail some gringos, tear gas and police truncheons from Nazi-influenced fascists in Chile, terrorist car bombs in Peru and an expulsion order by a drugs & thugs U.S. Ambassador in Bolivia when he got in the way of illicit spying.

Allan J. Wind had strong views and dreams about egalitarian futures in science fiction and fighting society’s injustices, even as a boy. He was an early Earth Day activist for environmentalism, and political reform and anti-corruption. In college he joined different causes including “No Nukes” and against authoritarian regimes.

Now, in this gripping account, he shares his story of discovery and adventure among the peoples of the Andes. With stark honesty and powerful prose, “Doctor” Alonzo tells the tale of his own enlightenment in the hopes of inspiring the next generation to dedicate themselves to the principles of working to build a better tomorrow.
