Who is Author Alex Beecroft?

Alex Beecroft was born in Northern Ireland during the Troubles and grew up in the wild countryside of the English Peak District. She studied English and Philosophy before accepting employment with the Crown Court where she worked for a number of years. Now a stay-at-home mum and full time author, Alex lives with her husband and two children in a little village near Cambridge and tries to avoid being mistaken for a tourist.

Alex is only intermittently present in the real world. She has lead a Saxon shield wall into battle, toiled as a Georgian kitchen maid, and recently taken up an 800 year old form of English folk dance, but she still hasn’t learned to operate a mobile phone.

Alex writes queer romance – that is, her main characters are typically gay, bisexual, transgender, pansexual or asexual men. Best known for historicals, she also writes Fantasy/SF and contemporary romance.

She is represented by Louise Fury of the Bent Agency.

What’s your latest book all about?

The fairies at the bottom of the garden are coming back with an army.

Ben is a modern, sceptical man but the fairies are trying to abduct him. When he hires Chris’s paranormal defense agency to protect him, he doesn’t expect to fall in love.

Chris is a refugee from his own time. He’s lost one lover to the elves already. Terrified, but determined that this time he’ll do better, he promises Ben that the elves will get him over his dead body.

If only that wasn’t looking so likely.

Under The Hill was voted Best Multicultural Fantasy 2013 in the mm romance Swirl Awards. Previously presented in two books, this new edition has the whole story in one volume. If you love KJ Charles’ Green Men and Magpie Lord books, you’ll love this. If you don’t know KJ Charles’s books, you should definitely check them out.

But in that case, think of Under the Hill as the Legend of Tam Lin meets Ghostbusters, meets Dambusters, meets Wallace and Gromit 🙂 It’s an epic tale of lovers abducted by elves and the intrepid men prepared to give everything to get them back.

How did you get the idea of writing this book?

Under the Hill came about by accident. I was going to write a gay re-telling of Tam Lin – a folk tale in which a young man is kidnapped by the Queen of the Elves and rescued by his lover. I had planned it as a short novella which I would write while I was researching World War II prior to writing a historical novel set in WWII. But as I learned things about Lancaster bombers and their crew, I got so excited about what I found out that soon my short elf-story began to expand to include it all. One of my main characters turned into someone who had been a Lancaster bomber pilot who had time traveled from WWII.

Then I decided that my other main character would be a British Asian whose family had arrived in Britain from India. And that set me off wondering what the Indian equivalent of elves was. At which point and my other main character acquired a back-story where he was a reincarnated prince of the Gandharvas…

It sounds complicated, but then it also became a very large book, and there was room for things to get complicated. I’m happy to say that it’s certainly very unique. I don’t think there’s anything else like it elsewhere!
